Your bones are living tissues that are continuously being replaced. Osteoporosis happens when the building of new bone tissues cannot keep up with removal of old bone tissue. This can cause increased bone loss within the body (if not slowed or stopped) and the bones can become more weak and brittle. In severe cases, patients with osteoporosis can cough or sneeze and cause bones to fracture.
The bones that are at highest risk of injury with Osteoporosis are the hip, wrist, and spine. Other weight bearing bones such as the pelvis, femur, and lumbar vertebrae are susceptible as well. Osteoporosis can happen to men and women, but it occurs most frequently in older (post-menopausal) women.
If you have chronic back pain, experience loss of height, a stooped posture, have spinal compression fractures or collapsed vertebrae, these can be signs of Osteoporosis.
Doctors of chiropractic conclude that Osteoporosis can occur due to lack of exercise to specific spinal segments, and improper nutrition. To avoid increasing Osteoporosis, it can be safe to perform weight bearing exercises in combination with healthy nutrition to benefit to strengthen your bones. As usual, check with your chiropractor before starting your exercise to make sure the body is ready for it.
